TAP: Together at Perrott’s

Together at Perrott’s is a mosaic project celebrating Birmingham as a City of Sanctuary.

In the summer of 2024 the UK entered a dark moment as anti-immigration protesters targeted violent disorder towards migrant communities, in particular asylum seekers. Many of our community were negatively affected by the disorder, which does not reflect our values – there is no place at the Folly for this sort of hate.

Our young people worked with us to apply for the Home Office’s Community Recovery Funding and spoke brilliantly about their support and values for migrant communities:

‘I don’t think [asylum seekers] know who is being kind and who is not because of the riots. Because now they might think everybody in England is being just mean.’

‘I think that the riot was ugly. We don’t discriminate at Art Pad. It’s definitely important to be kind to other people. They can make friends [at the Folly]. ‘

‘My dad is a refugee from Syria. My teacher is a refugee. Everybody should be treated the same’

TAP will work with local asylum-seeking families and the local community to create a permanent mosaic celebrating sanctuary, togetherness and community. We chose mosaic as an art form due to its use for centuries across different countries and cultures and celebration of shared motifs and patterns. We will be running a trip to Wroxeter Roman City to see an original Roman Mosaic and Villa which will serve as inspiration for our work. Re. Future Artist Member Paula Ligo will lead the project, which will culminate in a permanent mosaic at the Folly. The mosaic will explore themes of togetherness, cross-cultural exchanges and community.
